HBCU Energy Career Pathways Initiative
Our flagship Energy Career Pathways Initiative introduces middle and high school students to the vast opportunities within the clean energy and sustainability sector. The program is designed to:
-
Provide early exposure to energy-related careers through engaging curriculum and hands-on projects.
-
Connect students with HBCU faculty, industry mentors, and energy professionals.
-
Offer real-world learning experiences through site visits, internships, and project-based learning.
-
Prepare students for college and workforce readiness with technical skills and leadership development.
-
Create a clear pathway from K-12 to HBCU enrollment and energy industry careers.
Summer Program: HBCU Energy Institute STEM Academy
As part of the HBCU Energy Education Prize Round 2, we are launching a comprehensive summer program designed for middle school students in Baltimore City, housed at one middle school and one public school. The program will serve 50 students across two specialized tracks:
1. HBCU Robo: Renewable Energy & Robotics
-
Introduction to solar, wind, and battery storage technologies.
-
Hands-on robotics projects related to grid optimization and energy efficiency.
-
Coding and automation workshops designed for energy applications.
2. HBCU Drones: UAVs in the Energy Sector
-
Drone piloting and FAA certification preparation.
-
Use of drones for solar farm inspections, wind turbine maintenance, and energy audits.
-
Data analytics and geographic mapping for energy infrastructure.
Each track includes guest lectures, field trips, and industry mentorship, ensuring a robust and immersive experience for participants.
Why This Program Matters
Baltimore City students face systemic barriers to STEM education, including limited access to advanced technology and mentorship opportunities. By hosting our program in one middle school and one public high school, we are directly addressing the need for:
-
Increased awareness of energy careers.
-
Hands-on, experiential learning in renewable energy and sustainability.
-
Early exposure to HBCUs and energy industry leaders.
This program will not only inspire future energy professionals but will also lay the foundation for a stronger, more diverse energy workforce.
Get Involved
We invite schools, educators, industry partners, and parents to join us in building the next generation of energy innovators. Through partnerships, sponsorships, and curriculum integration, we aim to scale this initiative and expand its impact nationwide.

HBCU Energy Institute K-12 Energy Career Pathways Program
Empowering the Future of Energy Through Education
Our Commitment
The HBCU Energy Institute (HBCUEI) is dedicated to expanding access to STEM and Energy Career Pathways for K-12 students, particularly those in underrepresented communities. Our mission is to collaborate with primary and secondary schools to increase awareness, capacity, and engagement in renewable energy, sustainability, and advanced energy technologies.
Through strategic partnerships with HBCUs, school districts, and industry leaders, we are creating an early-stage talent pipeline that prepares students for careers in energy-related fields. Our hands-on approach ensures students receive experiential learning opportunities, industry exposure, and real-world applications of STEM education.
