HBCU Energy Institute

In Partnership with Prep4Work

The HBCU Energy Institute (HBCU-EI) is designed to connect students, graduates, and professionals from Historically Black Colleges and Universities to high-growth careers in clean energy, sustainability, infrastructure, and climate-resilient industries. Our application process is intentionally accessible, equity-centered, and aligned to real workforce demand.

Applying is more than submitting an application — it is the first step in joining a national talent ecosystem that connects education, skills, employers, and opportunity.

Who Should Apply

The HBCU Energy Institute welcomes applicants who are interested in careers across the energy transition, including but not limited to:

  • Renewable energy (solar, wind, storage)

  • Energy efficiency and building performance

  • Grid modernization and utilities

  • Climate policy and sustainability

  • Engineering, project management, and finance

  • Data, AI, and energy analytics

  • Environmental justice and community energy

Eligible applicants include:

  • Current HBCU undergraduate and graduate students

  • Recent HBCU alumni

  • Faculty-nominated fellows

  • Career-changing professionals aligned with HBCU-EI pathways

No prior energy experience is required for entry-level pathways. Motivation, curiosity, and commitment to impact matter most.

Step-by-Step Application Process

Step 1: Register Through Prep4Work (Required)

All applicants begin by creating a Prep4Work profile, the official skills-matching and workforce platform for the HBCU Energy Institute.

Prep4Work enables applicants to:

  • Identify transferable skills and career interests

  • Align academic experience with energy workforce pathways

  • Be matched to Institute programs, internships, fellowships, and employer partners

  • Build a verified skills profile used across the HBCU-EI ecosystem

👉 Register at: www.Prep4Work.com

This registration is required for all applicants and serves as the foundation for personalized placement and opportunity matching.

Step 2: Complete the HBCU Energy Institute Application

After completing Prep4Work registration, applicants will be guided to the HBCU Energy Institute application form. This includes:

  • Educational background and institutional affiliation

  • Career interests within the energy and sustainability sectors

  • Short narrative responses on goals, interests, and community impact

  • Resume upload (if available; not required for all tracks)

Applications are reviewed holistically, with attention to potential, lived experience, and alignment with Institute pathways.

Step 3: Skills Matching & Pathway Placement

Once submitted, your Prep4Work profile is used to:

  • Match you to HBCU-EI programs, cohorts, or certificates

  • Identify relevant employer-aligned skills gaps

  • Recommend learning modules, credentials, or experiential opportunities

  • Connect you to internships, apprenticeships, or project-based learning

This ensures participants are placed into pathways that reflect both personal goals and labor market demand.

Step 4: Selection & Onboarding

Selected applicants will receive:

  • A formal acceptance notification

  • Program details and timelines

  • Onboarding instructions through Prep4Work and HBCU-EI

  • Access to mentors, advisors, and employer partners

Participants become part of a national network advancing energy equity, innovation, and workforce leadership.
